In this large-format, generously illustrated volume, various schools of Buddhism are treated with an emphasis on historical background, fundamental philosophical concepts, and special attention to their place in the contemporary world. Subtle differences of thought are delineated and difficult concepts touched upon in a way that makes them accessible to the uninitiated reader. The succinct text complements the expressive and evocative photographs, which eloquently reveal the depth, gentility, and beauty of this complex and influential tradition. With a fine glossary and a bibliography leading to other basic work on the subject, this volume makes an excellent starting point for the general reader.

The book also explores the presence of Buddhism today in Tibet, China, Sri Lanka, South-East Asia and Japan, as well as of Buddhist enclaves in the religion's originating country, India. Powell concentrates on describing, often passionately, the contemporary landscape and all-too-frequently perilous position of Buddhism in those places.
