Conch shells along with cowrie shell and other varieties of shell hold considerable importance as they are recognized and appreciated as a form of currency and were exchanged so in the past. Cyprea moneta - its name clearly reveals its ancient use, as a medium of exchange. The shell was brought to Africa many centuries ago, probably from the coasts of Bengal and the Maldive Islands in the Indian Ocean. The cowrie shell has an old hole and the conus shell has natural piercings that would allow for suspension. Superb usage and age patina - Collected in Mali.
