Old And Used Tuareg Tcherot Amulet Talisman-africa

Old and Used TUAREG Tcherot Amulet Talisman - AFRICAAn old Tuareg talisman, amulet or tcherot made of silver metal alloy from the region of Gao or Kidal, Mali. The original suspension twine still remains and is adorned by white and blue colored plastic cuffs that have been recuperated from a western product. This type of tcherot would be given to a young girl nce she has attained the age of 18.Tuareg jewelry worn for aesthetics purposes is valued for the beauty of each piece worn; geometric motifs are repeated, angular shapes and forms predominate contrasting with curvilinear shapes. A number of motifs are used: dots, circles, zig-zags, triangles, parallel lines, etc. all intended to draw attention on the wearer. The more aesthetic a tcherot or other talisman would be, greater would be its effectiveness and power to ward of evil (the evil eye) and to bring luck and good fortune to its wearer.Necklaces and pendants, more than any other pieces of jewelry worn by Tuareg women, are symbols of age, wealth and social status. It is on important occasions, such as feasts and ceremonies, that women take out all of their special jewelry and wear multiples of necklaces, otherwise simple necklaces are worn singly on a daily basis. It is not uncommon for older Tuareg pieces tend to contain more nickel as the Tuareg preferred to wear pieces that did not have too much shine so as not to attract attention, also silver was not readily available till a later date.In design, forms adhere closely to a few basic shapes that are repeated over and over in Tuareg pieces of metalwork, embroidery and leather work.Motifs, as is the case in all old pieces have been hand-incised with a sharp metal tip. The interior of the talisman would contain a piece of paper on which were written verses from the Koran or old magic formulas known and prepared by the Marabout, or some may even contain sand from the Sahara.NOTE: For a similar tcherot please see : " Art of Being Tuareg" edited by K. Seligmen and Kristyne Loughran pp. 199The multi-strand twine measures 52 cm (20 inches) and is original.Superb usage and age patina - Collected in Mali.
