This unique pendant is made from a cut and polished slice through an amethyst-containing geode that displays all of the different gemstones in a stunning array of coloured layers. At the top, a layer of smoky, subtly banded semi-translucent agate gives way to boldly defined white and rose-brown agate stripes that separate it from the crystalline part of the geode. First, there is a layer of crystalline rock crystal (quartz) that looks almost like crushed ice when illuminated from the front but, with the light shining from behind, you can see that it is composed of largely crystal clear gemstone. This melts into a band of pinkish-yellow, mixed agate and crystalline quartz before ending in a beautifully-coloured layer of brilliant purple amethyst crystals at the base. Although hardly visible in the photo, when held up to the light, the upper band of agate reveals itself to be beautifully striated throughout

Measuring 30mm x 22mm (approximately 1.2" x 0.85") including the sterling silver setting, the stone is 4mm thick (a little over 0.15"). The drop from the 18" sterling silver chain to the pendant base is about 40mm (over 1.5").

This is probably the best of these unusual geode slices that I was able to obtain ... beautifully polished, the end result is a striking and beautiful piece of natural jewellery! The name Amethyst derives from the ancient Greek word "amethustos" meaning sober. It was said that an amethyst could prevent the bearer from becoming excessively drunk and also instil a sober and serious mind. In Greek mythology, amethyst was rock crystal dyed purple by the tears of Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry. Amethyst has been thought to have many attributes throughout history - it was known as a gem that would bring forth the highest, purest aspirations of human kind. Throughout the ages, monarchs have used Amethyst as a symbol of royalty and power. It also has religious connotations, symbolising piety and celibacy; it is often worn by members of the clergy and used to adorn crosses.

The ancient Japanese believed Rock Crystal was formed from the breath of a White Dragon and was representative of perfection. Astrologers since ancient times have recognised an affinity between rock crystal and the moon and Burmese lore places it on a par with diamond and behind only the ruby in occult value. It is found in round unremarkable stones known as geodes that only reveal the beautiful crystals inside when cut open. Some also contain the lovely coloured crystals of amethyst at their very core. Formed under intense pressure and heat, these stones are truly Vulcan's treasure!
