Old TUAREG Silver Hair Tcherot Amulet Talisman-AfricaAn old Tuareg talisman, tcherot or tereout tan 'eraf , tereout = talisman and tan'eraf = of the head. Made of silver alloy, Tuareg women of Niger wear this tcherot at the back of their heads, suspended from the hair. The triangular shape of the amulet is considered to be a powerful amulet against the evil eye, and is a recurring theme and shape in Tuareg jewelry, as well as other art forms. Tuareg pieces display a great aesthetic style and are valued for the beauty of each item of jewelry worn; geometric motifs are repeated, angular shapes and forms predominate, contrasting with curvilinear lines. This tcherot displays various motifs: dots, circles, zig-zags, triangles, parallel lines, etc. all intended to draw attention to the wearer. The more aesthetic a tcherot, the greater would be its effectiveness and power to ward of evil (the evil eye) and to bring luck and good fortune to its wearer. It is not uncommon for older Tuareg pieces tend to contain more nickel as the Tuareg preferred to wear pieces that did not have too much shine so as not to attract attention, also silver was not readily available till a later date. Designs have been punched, repousséed and hand-incised as is the case in all old pieces; all tips are highlighted by flat copper tips that have been incised with a linear "x" pattern, suspension loop is of copper as well. Copper rings hang below, from which were probably suspended small cut-out triangles. The back-side of the amulet consists of a copper sheet, oxidized with wear and exposure.
